Books help refugees regain their humanity !

In 2023, BSF installed a library filled with books and board games aboard the Humanity 1 search and rescue ship, which is operated by the German NGO SOS Humanity. Their mission: to save people fleeing their home countries from drowning in the Mediterranean. To treat them, to protect them, and to document their stories.

Over the past two years, 2,478 men, women, and children have been saved by the ship Humanity 1.

But aren’t there more pressing needs than books? This is a question we’re often asked, and you will find our response in this video:

Yes, culture can also save lives! It offers people stressed by months of exile, the means to fight off their boredom, and to evade their traumas, even if only for a moment. So these survivors can do more than just survive and have the ability to live. Allowing them after months of hardship to find their humanity.

Today we need you! This first library is both useful and essential, but it is far from meeting the diverse needs of the people who use. We wish to enrich the library with hundreds of books in English, French, and Arabic.
